Starting a t-shirt business might seem easy and fun, but behind the scene there is a huge arsenal of strategies that one should know if prepared to launch in the business. These 5 quick steps will help you understand some of the basic aspects on how to start a t shirt business company selling custom t-shirt designs.
How to start a t shirt business
1.DO YOUR RESEARCH AND PLANNING
When deciding to start a business selling t-shirts, you must have some basic information about the clothing industry. You must also have a solid business plan, to ensure profit to your business.Check out successful business brands for tips on how they succeeded, they might be very helpful. You must establish your budget before deciding going too deep into the business. You might have huge plans, but a small budget, so make sure that you have enough resources to fulfill your expectations.
2.IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS A BRAND
Establishing your brand is definitely one of the most important foundations of your business, so you have to pay a lot of attention at this chapter. Your brand represents your whole image and the way that you are perceived by the customers.
Your brand must have your distinctive personality, must be unique, like you, and a brand that has a strong personality always stands out! Think of a strong name and a tagline to encapsulate your brand in one sentence, to make the crowd know what your business is about.
You have to figure out your goals and your target market to decide what kind of t-shirt designs you will get printed.
3.CREATE YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGNS
You have to do some researches on the internet to see the latest apparel trends, what the t-shirt community asks for. Now, after you have decided what to get printed, you should find a graphic artist. In case you are not a graphic designer yourself, you can find lots of talented designers on freelance sites like www.guru.com, www.elance.com, www.odesk.com or on t-shirt competition sites like DesignByHumans, Teetonic or TeeFury. You can find the style that suits you, by checking the artists past works and hire them.
If you have a lower budget, you can chose the cheapest possibility for your business: purchase royalty free vectors and create your own designs. You can find plenty to chose from here: www.tshirt-factory.com The disadvantage is that the designs will not be unique, but you have to admit that is much cheaper.
4.KNOW YOUR COMPETITION
You should always keep an eye on the other t-shirt design companies you’ll be competing with. You should check their designs, their pricing and promotions. You should learn from them, not copy them. If they are successful, so can you, but you have to come with fresh ideas in the same old market.Keep track of the successful ones and make sure to price your t-shirts appropriately. Consider the costs incurred in making T-shirts, such as material, printing and marketing.
5.FIND A PRINTING COMPANY AND A BLANK T-SHIRT PROVIDER
The blank t-shirts for printing must be achieved from the company that you find most appropriate. This will be your physical product, and your choice will reflect very strongly upon your brand. There are some websites that accept t-shirt designs, and they will print these for you on demand. www.Jakprint.com and www.Storenvy.com are two great printing companies.
There are plenty of different types of t-shirts, but you have to make a decision based on your kind of t-shirt designs and target market. For instance you can go for Tultex, American Apparel, Anvil, Next Level, Alstyle, Bella, BayIsland and many others. The t-shirt thickness should also be important when you chose your blank t-shirt type. The thickness ranges from 120gr to 200gr, and the ideal is 180gr.
Good luck!

I have T-Shirt art design (by psd file/Jpg/cdr/ai)for my clothing line. How is the good way to give those designs to printing company to be printed on my T-shirts without worried that those files are re-used by printing company members without my knowledge & they sell for personal business (example: use my file/design to be re-printed on personal t-shirt and sell it out of my clothing line lisence).
Every time I’d like to give my design to printing company, I always worried about that?
What is your suggest?
Thanks

Hi, Madelene
we haven’t collaborated with usatess so far and we don’t know too much about the quality of their printing. Instead, as I mentioned in the blog, we know two quality tee printing companies, Jakprint and Storenvy.
January 21, 2010 at 10:58 AM
Kontizz, you must sign a contract with your printer by means of which you are not allowing him to use your design without your permission. You must talk to a lawyer, that would be the best solution if you want to protect your artwork.

Nice to see that there are blog owners that care about their blogs and not post all kind of useless stuff but rather try to keep it clean and valuable for the sake of their subscribers. You’ve done a great job and i thank you for that and also for not traumatizing me with useless garbage and spam. You know, if you look for new ways to promote and improve you blog, i’ve open myself a corner of cyberspace and i would like to share it with you and your visitors, because it’s a good chance for anyone to learn how they can promote their websites and any online business if they have any for free or very low costs.I’m still getting it done and working on it as we speak, so it’s not as i wish but it’s a work in progress that already has value to it. If you care and wann help maybe you will link to it and why not let your friends know. It will get crazy this month cause i will give away alot of goodies.Visit:

I have a few friends that started t shirt companies in high school. Most of them got over it. I started designing my own shirts but just with fabric paints and such. It’s important to stick with it. Everything takes effort.

These five steps are a great place to start, but also the competition step should be a little more in-depth. For example, competition includes competition on the web and t-shirts are a huge market.

If you want good work cheap go offshore to get it printed. Problem with most people is that they can’t afford the MOQ(Minimun Order Quantity) most big companies require.

Jeez. It seems like everyone in the world wants to start a t-shirt business. It’s insane. This is a great article though. I think ultimately as long as you have the right designs and things that people want and the right fashion then you will go far and thats the hard part.

Thank you, really interesting. I was born in Thailand in 1975 but my mother and I fled and came here to England. Truthfully, I didnt really care much about my Thai history until my mum died last month, now I’ve been trying to discover as much as I possibly can. Seemed like food culture was as good a place as any to start from! Anyway, I found a thai food recipe site here that your readers might be interested in too.

The choice of shirt to print on will be critical to the kind of product that your business will make. Some variation in terms of pricing and greater flexibility for the buyer is what I did.

This steps are great to anyone who want to start a new t-shirt business, it is almost a business plan. However I would like to stress the importance of the material chose that will be used to make your product. It is really important to chose quality material because it will make a huge difference in your final product. Other thing that you should have in mind about material, it is how easy it is to find it. You don’t want a supply that is inconstant and do not deliver in time your material.
Good lucky to everyone who will start your own business.

February 14, 2011 at 9:27 PM
wow some of those colors are pretty graphic and vivid. The more colors and technology used to produce will cost more. For example the second picture last shirt on the right looks like you would have to take several steps to acquire that final project. Most people start off screen printing single layer then move up. Assuming you would want to cut the middle step and do it yourself. But any competent tshirt printer should be able to provide this service.
