Today I will introduce you to a very talented person that will inspire your creativity and dedication if you are considering going into the independent clothing business. The clothing line I encourage you to have a look at is Wandering Line, an apparel company dedicated to fans of character design.
The founder, Emory Cullen, graduated from Savannah College of Art Design in 2006 and practiced as an artist and designer. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where he’s been freely expressing his affinity for strange characters and animated figures in the form of this clothing line. From the jellyfish ghost hybrid to the illustrated dude with a vintage handlebar mustache – they are all his creations. Emory uses symmetrical shapes and lines to create illusion-based icons.
Everything goes through the sketching process, which turns out to be not only a normal stage in designing but also the most calming thing for Emory. The wandering and flow of ideas of an individual are what this line is based on, actually. It is quite obvious how much fun he has and how genuine he is with his creations, as they are very original, with a consistent style.
In his own words:
“I do not normally start a sketch knowing its outcome. My goals while sketching are to create simply surreal iconic designs.
Inking my designs takes forever, but I love it! It forces me to slow down and focus on my meticulous line work….a meditation of sorts.“
Wandering Line aims to make apparel fun and unique by utilizing simply surreal iconic designs. The idea is not just to sell quality products, but, more importantly, to keep producing new designs in a style that only Wandering Line knows how to create. And I just loved the last line:
“We do not aim to sell to everybody but instead to those who wander upon us with interest.”
Do not look for your public desperately, in a desire to sell more, but instead – let them come to you and identify with your style.
