Mother’s Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilization. Likewise, the Romans adopted the practice to their own pantheon.
In America, the precursor was Julia Ward Howe. She wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. It was a reminder of the power mothers have when they merge. It was about Mothers and women taking action on this day. Not just about the maternal bonds between mother and child. It was about the positive impact mothers have on society and the work they do for their children.
By the early 1920s, Hallmark and other companies started selling Mother’s Day cards. Many people are still sending cards to their mother. But, each country has its own Mother’s Day origins and celebratory twists. For example, Mexican moms are spoiled all day with food, flowers, and music. That music includes a serenade by mariachi singers with the song “Las Mañanitas.”
