Designers are their own masters

It’s amazing what a talented designer can do. When it comes to design, everybody has in mind a certain image, but not everybody is able to transpose those things into real images. Here comes the artists’ contribution. A custom design is much more complicated, because the final result must satisfy the client first of all, even if the entire work is done by the designer. I believe the designs are under rated and the designers are considered by some clients like their “personal artists”. Sometimes they just say…”I want you to change that and that and add that there…and if I like the way it will be, I will pay you” and they don’t think that those changes might just come with a little respect for the designer. A number of factors have to be taken into consideration when it comes to custom designs, such as how many concepts need to be presented, how many revisions are required, how much research is needed, the size of the business and so on. The best way to find out how much a custom design will cost is to get a quote from the designer them self. Developing an identity, like every other professional service, takes time and expertise. That time and expertise needs to be adequately valued. When a client requires the designer to create something that is close to his expectations, the designer faces a real challenge. If the designer creates an image that the client is satisfied with, the satisfaction comes from both parts.

People do not understand how important a good design is and how valuable it is to their business or project. I’ve seen on many competition sites, for instance, that the resulting designs are not always the one that you would expect. For some reasons, the designs can’t get to the client’s expectation because he doesn’t pay for the effort and of course, when the price offered is not even guaranteed, you might just have the feeling you are working in vain, or, let’s say it otherwise, experiencing in design. Let me show you some examples of custom t-shirt designs that aren’t exactly professional looking. If you are going to print it or even wear it, you must make it at least good looking and suitable to your wishes.

On the other side, professional designers have an actual design process that involves research, sketching, conceptualizing, and reflection and this is why they charge a prize that reflects their work. Here are some examples, and you can make a comparison now with the ones I’ve talked before.

I’m trying to say that a designer’s work must be valued much more that it is right now, the designers are not at the client’s disposal, they are much more imaginative and beyond that, much more able to transpose thoughts and virtual images into real ones. So, if you are a designer and you know you’ve got talent, keep up the good job, but don’t let clients underrate you. It’s not up to the client to estimate how valuable a designer’s work is, it’s up to the designer to make the client understand why their work is so valuable.
