It comes a time, once every few years when TV gives us an epic show. Such are Game of Thrones for the fantasy genre, The Wire for cop shows, House of cards for political dramas, to name a few.
The farther we get from the pre-internet era, the 80’s and 90’s to be more exact – the more nostalgic I get about their pop culture. Most of you who grew up with ET, the Brat Pack, Madonna, Stephen King film adaptations or 8-bit video games feel this way. It is obvious that the 80’s, with all their corniness, are the most referenced, spoofed and parodied of all periods. Once again, Hollywood gave us a product that perfectly blends a myriad of pop icons and symbols from that period. I’m talking about Stranger Things and I’m sure you’re already counting the days until the second season.
The show has the best cast ever. The children are genuine, they have an indisputable chemistry and are reminiscent of all 80’s kids movies. There’s also Winona Ryder, who gives an unbelievable performance, an 80’s and 90’s icon herself.
The subtle, yet undeniable references to the Goonies, ET, Steven Spielberg movies and 80’s TV shows openings are all there. The story is original yet has so many familiar leads to it. It is a trip down memory lane, a love letter to 80’s classic, as someone put it.
