Design Portfolio – Tshirt Factory illustrator Deni Dessastra
In the last couple of years we’ve been consistently expanded our team of contributing designer on Tshirt-Factory.com and the amount of talent as well as the variety of styles is almost overwhelming for a new visitor.
So, starting this week, we’re gonna bring back a special feature, called “Designer of the Week”, which will mainly focus on these illustrator’s portfolios, like a short insight into their creative worlds.
Today, we are focusing on Deni Dessastra, “tough graphic designer from Indonesia” and this is a short interview that shapes the man behind the intricate illustrations, offered for sale on the site.
OANA: Please tell us more about your art and design background. What made you become a designer?
DENI: I am just a man who loves to draw, with an experience in the screen printing process and with an advertising degree. I am determined to become a successful graphic designer, although my knowledge comes from books that I read freely in a book store.
OANA: How or when did you start illustrating on a professional level?
DENI: Back in the year 2008. At that time, I was working in a team, but at some point I had a thought that I needed to be independent and the only way to do that was to quit my team. The first opportunity that I had at that time was when my design was choosen to be printed by designbyhumans. After that, I got a lot of jobs doing T shirt designs from anywhere all over the globe.
OANA: Where does your inspiration come from?
DENI: My inspiration comes in many ways, from chit chat with my friends, or by travelling arround the city, riding my Vespa. My inspiration often comes from when I enjoy my time while having a mind refresh.
OANA: How would you describe your style
DENI: Detailed, mystical, the story of silence.
OANA: What tools you use? Do you go 100% digital or is there paper involved
DENI: I use both digital and traditional tools (paper). It depends on the situations. But mostly I go with the digital process for time efficiency.
OANA: Is there anything that you specifically avoid using in your illustrations?
DENI: Yes, I always try not to create design/illustration with a religious theme in it. It always has a sensitive feel in it.
OANA: What was the hardest job/illustration you have ever worked on?
DENI: There is no hard job for me, because I always enjoying the process and appreciate the results. By the way, almost all of my designs are done by mouse, no pen or tablet involved. Because by drawing with a mouse, I can control the level of the details and achieve the shape that I really want.
OANA: Can you name some of your favorite designs and why (personal or from other designers)?
DENI: My favorite design from my collection, called “The Chemistry Between Us”. The reason why I choose this is because I feel like I have succeeded in bringing the mood in it by combining two different themes: Beauty and Death. That is why I named this design “The Chemistry Between Us”.
OANA: Any graphic designers you admire?
DENI: Dhanank Pambayun, Digital Artist from Yogyakata Indonesia also known as Evergrunge.
OANA: Any words of advice for anyone just starting out as an illustrator/graphic designer?
DENI: Always work, work and work. Don’t put your priority in money at the beginning of your career. Keep working and upload your works anywhere on the web, let the world know you exist from your works. Let the law of nature do its work. Never ever give up on yourself!
